Science Communication

COM 598/798 Final Exam: A collection of the assignments I completed over the semester, with a short description included.

01

Recruitment Video

For this assignment, I was instructed to create a 2-3 minute video that could be used as a “recruitment video” to excite high school students about pursuing a career path into my field of study. I chose to focus on Environmental Health Science broadly, even though that's not technically my field of study.

02

Research Summary

I was instructed to summarize a recent publication from my field and translate the results for a non-expert audience. I chose a paper which looked at possible ways of modeling and predicting PFAS exposure via drinking water.

03

Commentary/OpEd

For this assignment we were told to submit an OpEd written on a STEM or STEM Communications topic of your choice. Given the ongoing discovery of high levels of PCBs in Poe Hall on NC State's campus, I decided to focus my OpEd on addressing the concept of a cancer cluster.

04

Policy One-Pager

For our One-Pager, we were instructed to create very concise summary of your topic, the science/technology/ethics/law underlying it, and your policy recommendation, suggestion or “ask”. I took a slightly different approach for this assignment and applied the same communication principles to explain a recent PFAS testing and clinical guidelines.

05

STEM Podcast

Is Nuclear Energy a Sustainable Solution?
00:00 / 06:37

Our final assignment for the course had us work with a partner to create a short podcast based on a STEM topic of our choice. My partner and I decided to talk about nuclear energy, its pros and cons, and whether or not it has a place in a sustainable energy landscape.
